Call to Action to Electric Utilities

Solar Panels

Today, most of the electricity supplied is still generated through the burning of fossil fuels. Fortunately, renewable sources of energy generated with wind and solar technologies are lower in cost today than fossil fuel plants and therefore almost all new plants are built with renewable energy. The reason all electricity is not generated with renewable technology is due to the fact that replacing existing plants requires huge asset right offs for utility companies and storage of energy from renewables is still a concern. This chart from the IEA report shows the committed (APC) switch in time between fossil fuels and renewables with wind and solar increasing drastically.  We believe that these commitments will be achieved and exceeded due to the fact that the cost of renewable power continues to decrease below fossil based power.

Our Call to Action for the utility companies is as follows:

  1. Replace all fossil fuel-based power generation systematically over the next two decades.

  2.  Push for incentives and accounting changes that make such replacement affordable based on future cost savings.

  3. Invest in storage to ensure uninterrupted supply.

  4. Leave gas plants operation ready for emergencies such as air conditioning demand during major heat waves.
